I experienced exactly the same thing. Occasionally keyboard and trackpad would work, occasionally not. Also, the trackpad would sometimes click and sometimes not. I tried:

- PRAM/SMC reset

It should say Touchpad on at least one item. Open up the properties for the Touchpad device, and try to install a driver from local disk (do not search online, that won't help). Choose USB input device as the driver, do not use the apple driver just yet. After the installation is finished, your touchpad will work. For some reason many Mac users have reported this solves their MacBook trackpad not working issue. Disable the Force Click option. In some cases, if your MacBook Pro trackpad isn't working, you can try to disable Force Click to fix the issue: Open System Preferences in your Applications folder. Navigate to the Point & Click tab.

Nowhere I was able to use my keyboard or trackpad. Apple first exchanged the top case and after five unsuccessful repair attempts even the entire MacBook. Today, the new MacBook starts to show exactly the same symptoms. You could say, the error must thus be faulty accessories or software. But the error continues with a blank system and everything unplugged. I am really thinking this is a production error of some sorts. Let's see what my next appointment at an Apple Store will bring.
